Meditation and breathwork has the ability to change your brain and physiology

I want to break down a topic that gets a lot of press, but not a lot of reasoning to back up why it is something that can be a pillar to your healing… *drumroll please*

The Power of Breathework!

Did you know that meditation and breathwork have the actual ability to change the way your brain functions and therefore your body’s physiology and your response to stress! Even if this is old news to you, it can always serve to be a reminder to return to the breath when things feel overwhelming or out of control.

Meditation and breathwork can be used to train your brain and redirect your thoughts over time – which can then change your emotions and your reactions to them. Breathwork can support you on your path no matter where you are at in your journey.

Breathwork is for everyone and can support you on your path, no matter where you are in your health journey. It took me a long time to understand this, but breathwork can support you even if it’s just incorporating deep breaths (or sigh) into your day when you are feeling stressed. Breathwork does not have to be complicated or something to add to your to-do list. Just start noticing your breath and how that plays a role on your nervous system.

Breathwork should not be:

  • Another thing on your to-do list
  • Something to control along with expectations for a specific outcome
  • Always taking the form of meditation

Breathwork actually should be:

  • Something that increases your awareness and supports you
  • Helps you get into rest and digest state
  • Something that takes form in many different ways

Should vs should not in terms of breathwork…Know that it does not look the same for everyone. It should not be something to add to your to-do list and instead something that is a part of your toolbox in terms of what supports you. It can take many forms, often increasing your awareness and perception. We store emotions, memories and traumatic experiences in our body and it is necessary (and supportive) to pause and try to release any of that tension that you may find yourself carrying around.

Next steps

All of these explanations are powerful reasons why breathework can be a pillar to your healing and provide you some self-care support along your journey.
